Oscars Snubbed The Great Debaters – I’m Boycotting
Maybe in my quick haste to see who was nominated this year for the 80th Annual Academy Award shows simply known as The Oscars, I overlooked something.
Why? Why? Why wasn’t The Great Debaters nominated in any category. Why? Why? Why wasn’t Denzel Washington or any of the other cast members from that movie not nominated. Why? Why? Why wasn’t any of the producers nominated?
Out of all of the nominations, only 1 person of color was nominated and that was Ruby Dee (which is a long overdue nomination).
Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, “I’m Not There”; Ruby Dee, “American Gangster”; Saoirse Ronan, “Atonement”; Amy Ryan, “Gone Baby Gone”; Tilda Swinton, “Michael Clayton.” For the full list of nominees, click here.
I don’t know about you, but although I’m not a member of the WGA, I am boycotting the Oscars this year for reasons of my own.

Haven’t seen Great Debaters, as yet.
AMEN! I thought the Great Debaters was a great movie and should be added to your ‘Classics’ collections. As an educator, I would recommend this movie, as well.
I’m boycotting too Shelia. Insane. A movie like that doesn’t even get a slight nod? Give me a break! I’m glad that Ruby Dee got nominated, but the entire cast of The Great Debaters get NOTHING? I’m going to have to blog about it.
The nom for Ruby is long overdue, but her role in the movie wasn’t that commanding or memorable…so I’m surprised at the nomination.
I haven’t seen the Great Debators yet, but I’ve heard so many wonderful reviews, I too am surprised at no nominations at all.
I am with you!
That’s just wrong, I know Ruby Dee has played better roles that this. She should have been nominated for the original A Raisin in the Sun. Her role was so brief in American Gangster, that this nomination is a pity-nod.
Michelle, it’s a movie that should be “required watching” for all.
Shaye, you know I agree–another classic.
PrincessDominique, it doesn’t make sense to me at all. That should have been one movie that swept the Oscars in nominations.
Opinionated Diva, “we” always seem to get nods for roles that aren’t flattering. I won’t even go there.
Eb, thanks for stopping by.
Regina, definitely go see it. You will not be disappoiinted!
MrsGrapevine, I’m with you. This nomination is long over due. I hope she wins just because she should have won a long time ago.
Jamaal, I’m not trying to take away from the other movies, but come on…just as you mentioned, the movie evokes so many different types of emotions…it was by far a film that deserved nominations.
Uh yeah, they should have been nominated! But we know how that goes…
By the way, like the new spot!
Stay blessed.
I haven’t seen The Great Debaters, so I can’t speak for it. But I agree with Mrs. Grapevine that the theatrical film version of A Raisin in the Sun should have been honored with Oscar nominations for Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil and Ruby Dee. The film received no recognition at all, and it was more powerful than the other films and performances of that year (1961).
I haven’t seen American Gangster either, but it’s nothing new in Hollywood to give supporting nominations to actors who are now elderly and have never been nominated as a “career” (not necessarily pity) nod. They rarely win. I actually felt sorry for Lauren Bacall, who was widely predicted to win, when they announced the name of another actress.
It wasn’t nominated because America is still the America from 50 years ago with a little bit of change. The old masters are still running the show with their grandchildren. Only way things will be on equal terms is if this whole world was on ground zero and then it will be survival of the fittest. We know the only way people ever defeated us is by cheating. On equal playing fields they know they cannot compete in academics or athletics. They just want to embrace us for our athleticism. Keep cheaing it is on your conscience & keep brainwashing your children with your false greatness. Peace my brothers & sisters.
