Did You Watch the Grammys?
The best performance at the The Grammy Awards was without a doubt Tina Turner and Beyonce.
Cher introduced Beyonce and Tina Turner for their show-stopping performance. Tina started out with What’s Love Got to Do With It and Beyonce joined her on stage for Proud Mary. All I can say is Beyonce had to work hard to keep up with Ms. Tina, because Tina did her thing. This was one of my favorite performances of the night.
The first award was given out by one of my all time favorite artists Prince. I was jealous as he hugged and congratulated Alicia Keys for winning the Best Female R & B Vocal performance for No One.
The original members of The Time performed Jungle Love. Morris Day still looks good y’all. Rihanna came out rocking a cute short hair style during the performance singing Umbrella and my other favorite cut from her last CD Please Don’t Stop the Music. Solange looked like she wanted to hit Rihanna when she hugged Jay Z on her way up to accept her first Grammy Award.
Amy Winehouse won for Best New Artist but wasn’t in the building. I had hoped that Ledisi would get it because I really love her CD. I have to admit Amy Winehouse’s performance was better than I thought it would be. Surprised she song Rehab, but anyway; she also won The Record of the Year award. I’m trying hard not to pick on Amy Winehouse and say how she really does look like a dope addict, but I hope that the love she got from her peers will possibly keep her on the narrow road to recovery…but then again, listen to the lyrics of Rehab.
Kanye West almost had me crying during his performance when he sang the song he dedicated to his mama. Best Rap Album of the Year…Kanye West…I’m so glad he won and although they turned the music on him as he gave his acceptance speech, he deserved that Grammy moment.
Song of the Year was Amy Winehouse’s Rehab (ironic…okay, I’ll keep my comments to myself…then again, its my blog and I’ll say what I want to).
Aretha Franklin was made to sing gospel. (No, I’m not going to say anything about what she was wearing, I’m writing about the queen and keeping it positive). BeBe Winans joined her on stage. I just love The Clark Sisters and they sang one of my favorite songs…”You brought the sunshine…”
Stevie Wonder introduced Alicia Keys as she performed for the second time that night singing her hit single No One.
I can listen to Herbie Hancock all day and night and I loved his acceptance speech. They turned the music on him too.
There’s no party without Little Richard ~ the original king of Rock n Roll.
Did you see the Grammys? If so, what did you think?

Love your recap…and yes I agree this was one of the best Grammys in recent years. Lawd, Amy, Amy, Amy, LOL…
“but then again, listen to the lyrics of Rehab.”
Yep listen to those lyrics…my husband said that Amy is going to die from a heroin overdose…he might be on to something…
What a shame that so much talent has such an addictive personality.
As an Oaktown girl, I agree about Ledisi. Her album is da bomb. But she has not received the press and promotion of Winehose so I wasn’t surprised. That Brit can sang though. Ditto on all your points.
I didn’t watch them this year. I did flip the channel on to watch Kanye perform “Mama.” Then I turned back to Iron Chef.
Gwyneth
I watched it in parts, was real glad I saw Prince, the Tina Turner/Beyonce portion, Ms Tina is AWESOME! and I saw Kanye honoring his mom! Great Post.
angelia
Yes, I seen the grammy’s and your recap was awesome! Although i missed some of it because i got a lil bored. Kanye was awesome! Oh, did Miss Tina turn it out and although i don’t care for Beyonce she did good and as you said had to work extremly hard to keep up with Tina and i noticed she was trying mighty hard too lol. I didn’t see Amy perform i just caught when she received the last award and she was looking like she needed to be at the rehab during that moment. I was happy to see Herbie Hancock, hadn’t seen him in a while. The best part for me was seeing Prince and my friend says he’s not a man puhleeze the brother is beyond talented and that’s all that matters to me!!!!! Awesome Post!!
The Grammy’s was really different this year. I enjoyed Tina/Beyonce – eventhough a tad slower, Tina still had it going on. I will always love The Clark Sisters. Morris Day and the Tyme – AWESOME. Amy Winehouse – all I can say is speechless….
Love your comments and recap!
I watched the majority of it this year. I missed the opening, but I caught Kanye, and Tina/Beyonce’s performance and realized, for the first time, that Tina is who Beyonce reminds me of as to some degree. I’m so behind times though – kept wondering if Beyonce and Jay-Z are still a couple or what. I sort of decided that they must not e when I saw what looked like chemistry between he and Rihanna.
Amy Winehouse – can sign, is unique unto herself for sure – but that baby needs help!
Great post, Shelia!
I forgot the Grammy Awards came on last night.
And I really looked forward to seeing it.
I was too busy watching the Nuggets/Wizards game.
Man, I hate I missed it.
I watched it and you pretty much summed up everything. And yes, Beyonce worked hard to keep up with Tina! Did you catch that she stepped on Tina’s toes?
Yasmin, I’m afraid if she doesn’t really get some help, your husband might be right.
Dera, hopefully Ledisi will get a Grammy with her next album.
Gwyneth, I need to come to your house if you’re going to be cooking
Angelia, Ms Tina is awesome. I hope I look that good when I get to be that age.
Yolonda, seeing Prince was one of my favorite highlights and I don’t care what nobody says, he’s all man as far as I’m concerned (talking to a long time Prince fan here…lol).
Cilla, Amy Winehouse has a lot of us speechless. You try not to say anything bad about her but…
Peggy, Jay Z and Beyonce are still a couple. Rihanna was so excited so she wanted her producer/friend to share the spotlight. It was a great collaboration.
Don, sorry you missed it. If I didn’t love music so much, I probably wouldn’t have watched it. I wouldn’t have watched the Nuggets/Wizards game either though
I’m sure some of the clips from the performances will be on youtube.
Cherlyn, that must have been when she grabbed her arm–which looked like she was holding on to her for support. Wow, I know she probably apologized so many times afterwards.
I stopped watching the Grammys about 10 or 12 years ago when I realized that most of the people nominated for pop and R&B music were people I’d never heard of! I decided that I was officially middle-aged and have stuck to Emmys and Oscar broadcasts.
But Aretha, Tina, Stevie, Cher, and the Time (oweeoweeoh!)? Sounds like my kind of show.
Now, I want to know what Aretha had on. I hope she’s still not flashing those massive tits like she used to (which doesn’t seem appropriate if she sang gospel, anyway). She is undoubtedly the Queen of Soul, but having the title doesn’t mean you know how to dress . . . .
Real nice recap. I didn’t watch and now I hate I missed Prince, The Time, Kanye and Lady Ree. I’m with you when it comes to Prince. He’s short and strange as all get out, but there’s just something ’bout him, those boots and the way he screams (LOL).
Hate to say it, but I have to go along with Ms. Bettye when comes to Aretha. She is the undisputed Queen of Soul, but y’all know most times she dresses like the big girl who works up in the Cathouse (LOL). So go on and tell us. What exactly did Sister Ree have on?
I watched parts of the Grammy show, but flipped back and forth between that and The 100 Most Outrageous Moments (funny stuff). I’m glad that I caught:
1. Tina/Beyonce – I LOVE Tina Turner
2. Morris Day and the Time – Yes that brother still looks good and is crazy as ever
3. Prince – I love hearing him say just about anything
4. Rihanna’s performance and her uber cute haircut
5. Kanye’s performance with the strobing lights – very cool
Alicia did a wonderful job opening the show. Tina and Beyonce were just ok for me. I enjoyed Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and the Tyme. I never really heard Rihanna before. She was ok. I enjoyed the gospel number. After that I pretty much turned away to catch The Wire on the West Coast so I missed Herbie Hancock getting his award and didn’t see Little Richard.
It was definitely a spotlight for AA performers.
Bettye/Lori, Aretha’s fashion choice doesn’t get better. Lori, what’s your email and I’ll send you a copy of the picture.
Samara–If I ever get a chance to talk to Prince, I’ll probably fall out. I don’t know he’s the one celeb that I just absolutely adore.
“It was definitely a spotlight for AA performers.”
Patricia, that it was. Overall to me, it was better than the last few shows.
I was watching the Wire.
