I think it depends on the couple and what works for them and their relationship.
I dated about a year and a few months, but then we already knew marriage was the focus.
Gwyneth, it seems that seems to be the average consensus. I guess it does depend on the two people involved. Most of my male friends that are married told me they knew almost immediately that the woman they are currently married to was the one they wanted–so they didn’t feel the need to wait years. Now there were a few who waited years because they wanted to get some of the “play” out of their systems before making that committment.
Linda, I think if both parties are on the same page, then the time limit is probably less. If one is unsure, I can see it taking longer.

This is a highly personalized answer. I don’t feel there should be a time limit, but I do think at some point if things aren’t progressing, someone has to realize its not happening and just isn’t meant to be.
No one should feel pressured after 3 months, but you shouldn’t hold out for 10 years hoping something is going to change.
