I Love Music – Any Kind of Music by Guest Blogger Niambi (Brown) Davis

For Christmas 2006 my family created a monster. They presented me with an I Pod Nano. That thin silver rectangle and I are joined at the hip – I do not leave home without it. In the vinyl, reel-to-reel and eight-track era, music lovers had to suffer through an entire album even if only two songs were worth listening to. But it is the 21st century, and thanks to I Tunes and MP3 magic, all it takes is click and pay to build a custom play list.

Back in the day, the Ojays sang “I Love Music.” And I do – any kind of music. There is a little bit of everything on my play lists. I remember crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on a bright and beautiful day with the sounds of Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Stitt blowing in my ear. Did I really play my main man Luis Miguel 85 times in one month? And Russell Watkins, putting his glorious tenor to the classical “Nella Fantasia.” He is called “The Voice” for a reason! When I want to imagine myself in Old Havana, I mix a mojito and listen to the late Ibrahim Ferrer. That man’s voice was smooth like golden, aged rum. Cannot miss reggaeton or the Delta blues of Howlin’ Wolf and Son House.  I do love the harmonica and slide guitar.  Sometimes I am in the mood for the boisterous call of DJ Khaled or the Eastern-flavored rhythms of Panjabi MC. Of course, I love calypso, (Byron Lee wit’ de band) but the most-played of all are the Latin, from the old-school Hector Lavoe and the Fania All-Stars right up to the stars of 2008.

I listened to all of this while writing From Dusk to Dawn. And then I had a thought – instead of simply writing to music, why not create a musical journey through the lives of my characters – a play list that speaks to the love story of Ayo and Bilal at their happiest, through their challenge, the most trying and the happiest times of their lives. The idea turned into a CD that became part of my promotional give-away at Romance Slam Jam.  It was a real labor of love – after all, there are only so many songs to fit on one CD – maybe I should have made a double set! I left off Edith Piaf (whose story was one of this year’s Oscar-winning movies). But I did include The White Stripes – gotta give it to the white boy – he knows his way around a blues guitar! There’s some Jill Scott, some Etta James, some Phyllis Hyman and Wynton Marsalis, that genius with the golden horn. And I could not make a mix without Alex Torres y su Orquesta!

This is becoming a habit; I have got two books to follow – and I am already planning the next play lists!

But, enough about me–Shelia and readers, what’s on your play lists?

Greetings Shelia and thanks for hosting Niambi at your blog space. We are both excited about the opportunity and will be checking in doing the day to see what’s on everyone’s playlist. Hmmm…I need to update mine…right now I have some Alicia, Ledesi, Jill, Heather Headley, Neyo, Anthony Hamilton…hmmm and a few neo-soul artists. What about you…any recommendations?
Oh yeah I need to get the new Ericka Badu album like yesterday. LOL.

  2. Shelia says:

    Hey Shelia!

We have the most uncanny sense of timing. Time after time I go to leave a comment somewhere and I’ll be darned if you aren’t right above it - it’s obviously a Shelia thang. :D

I’m sitting here listening to New Birth, Jeffrey Osbourne, Michael Henderson and War right now. The classics wipe out most of what’s being played now.

  3. JC Martin says:

It’s funny, I haven’t had a good listening session in awhile. I hear and read about others who write to music, the only music I ever wrote to was meditative music. As far as my playlist I need to get on it because it is non-existent right now.

But my daughter keeps me listening to a variety. Her playlist consist of:
Beyonce, Rev. Timothy Wright, Jordin Sparks, Chris Brown, whoever sings Apple Bottom Jeans (if that is even the name of the song), Alicia Keys, and many more…

Niambi, I will have to try your playlist technique when writing my next full length story. Hey if I can write through the noises of children why not to music.

Thanks for shedding some more light on the making of what I understand to be a great book. I hope to find out soon.

  4. Shelia Goss says:

Niambi welcome to my spot on the web. Currently on my playlist is Mariah Carey’s E=MC2, Leona Lewis Spirit, Lyle Jennings and I have some old school on there with Chaka Kahn, Patti Labelle, my theme song “Oh Shelia” by Ready for the World and a lot of Slow Jams from back in the day. I even have some hip-hop on there which may surprise some people.

Yasmin, thank you for making my blog one of your stops.

Shelia, thanks for stopping by. We also spell our names the same way which is rare.

JC Martin, I can write to music/tv blasting/etc. I actually get more written when I’m listening to certain music.

    Hi Niambi -

I too love music any kind of music. And I think the iPod is super wonderful. I buy lots of electronic toys and I usually tire of them easily but the iPod is my buddy. Everyone but my four month old grandson has an iPod. I have seen my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 9 share an ear bud when they are both listening to the same song and one does not have it on their iPod.

So what I am listening to these days - Lizz Wright - Orchard, Julie Dexter Conscious, Dianne Reeves - When you Knew - just love her version of Just My Imagination, Dee Dee Bridgewater - Red Earth, Gina Catelino - Swept in Sound (One of her songs was background music on a show I was watching on tv and I liked the sound bite enough to find what it was and purchased it) and of course the soundtrack for From Dusk to Dawn.

I am a walker and my iPod makes the miles fly by - but to keep up my walking pace - I tend to listen to old Motown, Latin music, and Afro-latin music. Last summer I walked to Santana - All That I Am and Sergio Mendes - Timeless.

Some favorites that I have given as gifts and appeal to a wide audience - Alex Bugnon - Southern Living, Temptations - For Lovers Only - Dean Plays Bob Volumne Two.

I like going back and listening to music that I have not listened to in a while and saying how did I miss hearing that - either in the words or the treatment of the music.

If I listen to music while working it is classic or jazz.

    Take Care

    Hi Niambi,

Now I know I’m a fan. Phyllis Hyman.

Boy do I wish my folkes would get me an IPOD or MP-3. My teenager has one and although I don’t think I like the idea of having it stuck in my ears, I do like the idea of customizing my music and hooking it up to a set of speakers. What fun that would be. I think the CD idea is a great idea. I’m thinking of doing it myself. I’m wondering how that works with “rights”, you know, making a CD of other people’s music?

Great blog, Shelia. I check you out often.

  7. Niambi says:

“Oh, oh Shelia…” (lol) Thanks so much for hosting me today. I hear you about that hip-hop and there is some that I really like, especially for the beat (it has a good beat and you can dance to it). I’m dating myself to Bandstand days, but it holds true. However the words are whole ‘nother thing. I love “We Takin’ Over” with Khaled, Rick Ross, TI & Akon, and “Rock Boys” but the words… Chaka Khan is my girl! I remember her from the days of Rufus. As you can see, I could go on and on (lol)…

  8. Niambi says:

Hi, Beverly: Yet another thing we have in common! I’m a fan of DeeDee Bridgewater and Diane Reeves as well! As far as vocalists, Carmen McRae, Dakota Staton and Sarah Vaughn are pure gold. (And thanks for the compliment on From Dusk to Dawn :)) Who are some of your Latin & Afro-Latin favorites?

  9. Niambi says:

Shelia, I like that comment about the classics. I don’t care what generation, or era - they stand the test of time.

  10. Niambi says:

Hi, Rhonda: Phyllis Hyman had the most rich and beautiful voice!
See, I remember all that other bulky stuff that you had to lug around (or not) in order to be mobile with music. This little old thing is a gift to my ears. As far as “rights” I don’t make any profit off the CD - but give it as a gift.

  11. Niambi says:

Thanks, JC. I loved making the book/music connection. And I hope you enjoy the book - thanks for the compliment!

  12. Julia Press Simmons says:

I write to movie scores like Braveheart and Transformers…lol
I am currently listening to a change gonna come by Sam Cooke!
    I can’t wait to read Niambi’s book!

  13. Cilla says:

I am a music fan also. Last year when Beverly Jenkins published Deadly/Sexy, she recommended that readers listen to Frankie Beverly and Maze. Boy it was hot… I wish I had Niambi’s list when I read From Dusk to Dawn. I’ll do that when I read it again… Loved the article Sheila

  14. Dera says:

Hey Niambi, I love your playlist. My daughter, Rebecca got me set up with an MP3 player before I left for Cuba. She did me up right. There was John Coltrane, Jay Z, After, Keyshia Cole, Sade, Brian Culbertson, Marvin, Al Green, Kanye West, you get the idea.
My playlist now includes Ibrahim Ferrer and Pablo Menendez, who gave us a special concert. Of course Sade is always on my playlist. Kem, John Legend, Miles Davis and Jaheim have been getting regular play.

  15. Dera says:

Hey Niambi, I forgot, how do we get ahold of your FDTD sound track?

  16. Darnetta says:

    Hey Niambi

My playlist is mostly neo soul (Erykah Badu, Floetry, Meshell N’d…, India Arie, Musiq Soulchild–> who could hit IT if he wants to…lol) but I also have some Teena Marie, Lisa Stansfield, Madonna, a dribble of R Kelly (yes, I’m still bumpin the Ignition remix…lol) Then of course I have a little Beyonce and Jay Z , Lil Kim, Tupac, Eminem, Devin the Dude, and some other hip hop stuff. I’m not really feeling Mary J right and I’m sad about that. Oh, I forgot one of my favs that I listen to everyday… Crusin by Smokey Robinson (and I have the redone version with Gwenyth Paltrow TOO…that gurl gotta little voice on her…lol)

I could go all day, so I’ll stop. Great tour stop!

    Best wishes

    Darnetta

  17. Shelia says:

Beverly, I love a little jazz too. I like to mix it up.

Rhonda, thanks for stopping by. As long as you’re not trying to sell it, I don’t think there’s an issue. For example, I use the music on my CDs and download them to my mp3 and I’m not paying additional funds to download them to the mp3 player.

Julia, that’s unique. I will have to try that.

Cilla, I listen to Southern Girl by Frankie Beverly to motivate me sometimes :)

Dera, I will have to do a search for their music. I like to listen to different genres of music.

Darnetta, nothing like some good neo soul on a playlist.

All, thanks for showing Niambi some love here on the blog this week. Let the music play!!! :)
