Pre-Screening Dates One Application at a Time

I’m not sure if you all remember my post – Dating & the Job Interview. Here’s a short excerpt from it:

Dating these days isn’t as simple as it used to be. Even when a friend or family member introduce you to a potential mate, you have to be selective and interview them. You need to know more about them than what kind of car they drive, cell phone number and email address.

Before getting seriously involved with someone there are things you need to know before letting them into your innercircle. Have you met any of his family or friends? How do they interact? What is his religious preference? What information is he volunteering? Most men live by the motto: ”don’t ask, don’t tell,” so get your list together and the next time you’re face to face, ask. Ask, not interrogate. Be prepared however to answer the same questions honestly. It’s only fair.

What would happen if guys had to fill out an application before we agreed to date them?  I came across this application on Black Femme Fatale’s blog one day:

In compliance with applicable laws, this woman typically does not discriminate because of age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, veteran status or disability. But because I am a woman, I can do whatever the hell I wanna do.

Instructions: Please print. Be sure to answer all questions. If a question does not apply to you, answer with “no” or “not applicable”. Do not substitute any bullshit for the information requested. Please attach 3 references. Do not use family members, homeboys or cut buddies that you claim you are just friends with. We would prefer if you use past girlfriends, coworkers, or someone that really does not give a flip about this one way or the other and will not lie for you.

Note: I do offer the opportunity for advancement. Upon outstanding behavior, you may be promoted to boyfriend, fiancé, or even husband if you are lucky.

Music to Set the Mood Not Just on Valentine’s Day

I think there’s a song to fit every situation. Besides books and film, music is another one of my passions. If you want to set the mood for a romantic evening, you can’t go wrong with any of the songs I mention below.  I can listen to a good slow jam any time; whether I’m in a relationship or not in a relationship.

    Frances E.W. Harper & Contest

francesharper I found out about Phyliss Wheatley, the first AA female poet, when I was in high school but it would be years later that I would find out about Frances Harper. I read a synopsis of one of her novels and had to get a copy.

Below is more information about Frances E.W. Harper from Wikipedia.

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (September 24, 1825 – February 22, 1911) was an African American abolitionist and poet. Born free in Baltimore, Maryland, she had a long and prolific career, publishing her first book of poetry at twenty and her first novel, the widely praised Iola Leroy, at age 67.

Iola Leroy was for some time cited as the first novel by an African-American author. Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.‘s 1982 rediscovery of Harriet Wilson’s Our Nig (1859) displaced it from that spot. Harper’s novel remains important as one of the earliest novels written by an African American and as a fictional work dealing with complex issues of race, class, and politics in the United States.

Frances Ellen Watkins was born to free parents in Baltimore, Maryland. After her mother died when she was three years old in 1828, Watkins was orphaned. She was raised by her aunt and uncle. She was educated at the Academy for Negro Youth, a school run by her uncle Rev. William Watkins, who was a civil rights activist. He was a major influence on her life and work.

At fourteen, she found work as a seamstress. Frances Watkins had her first volume of verse, Forest Leaves, published in 1845 (it has been lost). Her second book, Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects, published in 1854, was extremely popular. Over the next few years, it was reprinted in 20 editions.

In 1850, Watkins moved to Ohio, where she worked as the first woman teacher at Union Seminary, established by the Ohio Conference of the AME Church. (Union closed in 1863 when the AME Church diverted its funds to purchase Wilberforce University.) The school in Wilberforce was run by the Rev. John Brown (not the same as the abolitionist.) In 1853, Watkins joined the American Anti-Slavery Society and became a traveling lecturer for the group. In 1860, she married Fenton Harper, a widower with three children.

They had a daughter together in 1862. For a time Frances withdrew from the lecture circuit. Fenton died in 1864. Frances Harper was a strong supporter of prohibition and woman’s suffrage. She was also active in the Unitarian Church, which supported abolition.

She often would read her poetry at the public meetings, including the extremely popular Bury Me in a Free Land. She was connected with national leaders in suffrage, and in 1866 gave a moving speech before the National Women’s Rights Convention, demanding equal rights for all, including black women.

She also continued with her writing and continued to publish poetry. In 1892 she published Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted. One of the first novels by an African-American woman, it was quite popular. Harper continued with her political activism, and in 1897 was elected Vice-President of the National Association of Colored Women.

    Celebration Time Come On

The celebration continues.  Happy Birthday to my mama. I would put her picture up here, but she would kill me and I’m not too ashamed to say my mama is from the old school and my age wouldn’t stop her from trying to whoop me. Key word, “try” because she can’t out run me. LOL

Who is the person that I most admire?

My answer would be my mama. She’s endured a lot but never allowed her obstacles to overpower her. Through her, I can see faith in action.

She was one of the inspirations for my poem–What Is It?

    What Is It?

    by Shelia M Goss

Is it the sound in my voice

That makes them take a glance?

Or is it the stride of my walk

    Because I’m a proud woman?

    What Is It?

Is it the twinkle in my eyes

    That keeps them looking on?

Or is it the groove of my back

    Tall, Black, and Strong?

    What Is It?

    I find myself wondering

Do They like me for me?

Or Is it the outer appearance

    They only want to see?

    Behind the voice and body

    There’s a strong mind.

If they could only look inward

They’ll be surprised at what they’ll find.

Yes, When I speak, People stop to listen.

And to look into my eyes, you will see them glisten.

    But If you take a chance and look deeper within;

You’ll see that I’m much more

    than just a Black woman.

New Orleans Saints Wins Super Bowl

super bowl xlivCongratulations to my home team, the New Orleans Saints, for winning their 1st Super Bowl. We’re partying like it’s Mardi Gras. I dedicate “What a Man” by Salt N Pepa to the whole team. Who Dat?

The players who I heard speak to the reporters after their win, all expressed one common thing–they acknowledged  God Almighty. It was destiny.  They were the under dogs. The sports experts thought the Colts would win, but if God be for you, it doesn’t matter who is against you.

Miami Gardens, Fla. – Leading 24-17 and trying to stop the Colts, CB Tracy Porter intercepted a Peyton Manning pass and raced 74-yards for a touchdown that gave the Saints a 31-17 lead. Porter, a native of Louisiana, delivered the first Super Bowl title in Saints history. To read the rest, click here.

Saints Brees & Super Bowl Remix

Congrats to New Orleans Saints for making it to the Superbowl. It’s been hard concentrating on work because everyone here is so hyped.

Yesterday, I featured my favorite three New Orleans Saints hotties and got an email from someone saying I missed one. Well, I didn’t forget. I was going to mention “the man” today and that’s #9–Drew Brees. I dedicate “What a Man by Salt N Pepa” (listen below) to the Brees.

    drewbrees

The whole state of Louisiana is cheering our home team on. The parties have already started. With Saints pep rallies, African-American parades, Mardi Gras parades, the Super Bowl, etc. I don’t know if anyone is going to get any work done until Wednesday.

Here’s my Super Bowl Saints Jam Pick for today. Originally I had a list of several songs, but decided to just list this one.

Have a good weekend everybody or as we say in Louisiana, “Laissez les bon temps rouler” (Let the good times roll).

New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Hotties

As you can tell with the floating New Orleans Saints helmets saints2that I am getting ready mentally for the Super Bowl. I know you Dallas Cowboys fans are like, “been there, done that,” but stop hatin’  :)

It’s been hard to function with all of the pre-game celebrations going on and you can guarantee that the parking lot will be emptied so fast after church on Sunday, that you’ll see the dust from the cars spinning off for miles.

I spotlighted these three New Orleans Saints players a week before they won their division, so I wanted to spotlight them again.  These guys would be inspiration for a leading man in any one of my books (wink wink).

Reggie Bush Reggie Bush – #25

    Stats: Fine, Fine and Fionne

Usama Young Usama Young – #28

Stats: Sexy, Bad-boy and Cute Smile

Darren Sharper Darren Sharper – #42

Stats: Experience, Dimples, Pretty Eyes equals Hot

Sorry Colts fans but this is a Saints blog so no Colts spotlights here; but you’re welcome to leave a comment. I promise not to delete them (and that goes for you Cowboys fans too.)
