Tanna Frederick is starring as a dog in the title role in “Sylvia” at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

Why did you choose this role?
People have always told me to play this part, Sylvia, as long as I can remember…ever since I did another play by A.R. Gurney. I had never actually read the play or seen it. Just been told I would be perfect for it. New Years Eve I had my annual party, and I was in the grumpiest mood. I had withdrawals from not doing any stage since ‘Just 45 Minutes from Broadway’ had closed. After you run a play over 200 times, it’s in your blood and you’re used to going to the theatre every weekend, and then having ended it, I felt homesick in a strange way. A friend of mine, Cathy Arden, came to the party and had been in tears all day. She was playing the part of Kate in ‘Sylvia’ and she had been rehearsing for for weeks, but there was an issue with the actress playing Sylvia and the production was at a standstill. I jumped on the chance to play the part, I had always wanted to step into a show and have to put it up in a little amount of time-and the next day we started rehearsing and put the show up in twelve days. It was an amazing experience, and it’s a joy to do. The other actors were incredible and supportive and Gita Donovan the director was fantastic and finessed me right into the show.

Had you seen the original play before auditioning?
Nope! I was really glad I didn’t, because I was able to develop a great character based on my own pup, Garbo. She’s a cantankerous, lovable, stubborn, beautiful Shiba Inu, and I loved the fact that my preparation for the role was hanging out with her more!

Do you prefer plays or movies? Why or Why not?
Neither one can be fully experienced without experiencing the other…It’s such a necessity to do both-
the energy being returned to you in theatre from a live audience is incredible, learning to go with that energy and shift that energy and react off that energy. That’s something you don’t get with film, which is far more static. But then with film there’s those subtle nuances which you learn to mine without going over the top emotionally or physically, and those moments and that work is really necessary and difficult to get from the stage. But when you put the two together, the largess of theatre and the quick subtlety of film, you have a magical creative palate to chose from and can work everything into both mediums. It’s lovely. I love learning. I never stop learning something absolutely new every day. I’m so very, very thankful to have the opportunity to shift between both.

What’s next for you?
‘Just 45 Minutes…’ was filmed in Oct. We used the original cast and also pulled in Judd Nelson as the love interest, and it was so interesting to shoot. We had run the play so long I was worried there would be a flatness to our work, but I’ve seen the dailies and there is such a richness and delicious levels bursting out onto the film…I can’t wait to see the final product. It will probably be released Fall 2011. I’m also getting ready to film another movie, and looking forward to my annual Project Save Our Surf Fundraiser 2011: Surf 8 to 8, a twelve hour surfathon to raise money for Heal the Bay, which will be in Santa Monica this year on June 25th.

More about the play and how you can get tickets:

In this 1995 comedy by A.R. Gurney (“Love Letters,” “The Dining Room”), Greg and Kate are empty-nesters in the big city. On a walk in the park, Greg is adopted by Sylvia, a bouncy, frisky poodle mix. But Kate comes to feel that she is losing Greg to his adoring new best friend who just loves to be petted, scratched, and talked to. This imaginative twist on Greg’s midlife crisis leads to lots of laughs and some thoughtful insights into the nature of love, marriage, jealousy, and dogs.

Gita Donovan directs a cast that includes Cathy Arden, Frank Dooley, Steve Howard and Tanna Frederick (who recently completed work on a 10-month run in Henry Jaglom’s play “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway” and starred in his 2010 films “Irene in Time” and “Queen of the Lot”).

If you’ve been following the show, you know PoPrah is holding her own in the competition. She took a few minutes to answer some of my questions.

A lot of people don’t realize that you had a life in entertainment prior to being on the I Want to Work for Diddy show. Can you give them a brief overview of what you did prior to the show?

Wow, it’s really hard to sum it up and be brief but I’ll try my best.

I’ve always known that I wanted to own my own business since childhood. I used to play “company” in my dad’s home office as a child. I would have meetings with my own imaginary clients, signing contracts, creating receipts etc. Needless to say, I went to college a year early because I had skipped a grade and during my freshman year, both of my parents passed. So I was own a mission from there on out. And though it was very devastating, in my mind, that mean that I was in the world alone and had to take care of me and my younger siblings.

Since then, my goal has been to build a multi-media conglomerate, encompassing tv, music, film and fashion, just like Diddy actually. That’s why I felt I was a perfect match for the show, I’m his fraternal twin when it comes to business. I’ve had hit records in 13 countries and toured them all. They were songs which I wrote, and co-produced and were released by BMG & Warner Bros. My biggest song was #15 in the charts in Italy, Mariah was #15, it was #8 in the charts in Germany while TLC was #7. I’ve been in at least 6 movies, and executive produced, produced, directed and hosted two of my own tv shows which aired on network tv. I’ve also produced 3 tv show pilots for other people, including the cast from BET’s college Hill and a show I did with 7 of the girls from Flavor of Love, all aimed at growing my production company, Hollywood South. And here I am.

I’ve been watching the show since the beginning but for those who missed the first few episodes, why did you decide to use the name PoPrah?

Actually, I’ve called myself Poprah for over 5 years. I’ve always said my goal is to be a cross between Puffy & Oprah, that’s how you get Poprah. I really do feel I possess many of the same creative talents at Puffy now Diddy, as well as the humanitarian, visionary side of Oprah. The name keeps me focused and helps brand me, because I know people subconsciously connect it with my mentor Poprah and that helps brand me and where I’m headed.

Did you guys ever get a chance to sleep? From watching the show, you were constantly “on the go.”

There was really not time to sleep or really eat on the show, we were constantly on the go, or so wired anticipating the next surprise, that you couldn’t rest when you were supposed to be resting. But I’m really used to working 16 hour days, anybody who knows me says I’m the hardest working person they know, I’m the consummate workaholic. I’ve been all over the world and never had a vacation. It’s that serious. I just love to work. That’s why I was so annoyed with my cast members who weren’t on the same page with me, I felt they were really in my way from showing Diddy what I could do to get the job and I really didn’t expect it to be like that. So I was constantly reevaluating how to deal with the hate, jealousy, intimidation, and the inexperience all around me, and still get the job done.

As you watch the show each week, along with the rest of us, were you aware of some of the things being said by the other contestants about you?

I heard some of it, not all of course. Most of it was one way in the house and something totally different at elimination. But the truth is I really didn’t care if they liked me, I wasn’t there to make friends, I was there to win and work for Diddy. And that was the hardest part, being on a team with people who have totally different priorities. One is focused on profit, (me) and the others are focused on popularity,(them). The funny thing though, is that each time I got someone eliminated, they wrote me a letter and left it on my bed or nightstand apologizing and telling me they really thought I was the most qualified, and worked against me just because of the competition aspect even though they knew my game was the tightest, and they regretted it. Now that’s what Diddy means when he says, “BITCHASSNESS”.

Thanks to everyone for the love, support and advice.

Always keeping it real, your girl.
Poprah
If you feel crappy, don’t put a smiley face on it and pretend that you don’t! Your feelings are valid. Do list out the things that you are grateful for though.

3. Know that you deserve to absolutely grab life by the cajones and go for it. Dareitude, yeah!

4. Rejections, perceived failures and criticisms will happen. Remember it’s not you, it’s them! Failure is an illusion—now you know better exactly what you do want and you’ve learned how not to do something, right?

5. When life gives you lemons, Cutie Pie, put your big girl/boy knickers on and deal with it. All things are working toward good. They really are!

6. Be kind to yourself. Pay attention to your self talk. We say things to ourselves that we wouldn’t say to our dogs!

7. Give yourself the advice that you’d give a friend. We always know how to solve everyone else’s junk don’t we? Well the best friend you have is you. Believe that!

8. You have the right to reinvent yourself! You don’t have to remain stuck at who you are this minute! The people around you will have to catch up. Look at the masters of reinvention: Sean Combs, Gwen Stefani, Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, Barack Obama, Michael Jackson… Um, well, do reinvent yourself with reckless abandon but do remain human!!

9. Embrace beauty within and without. Instead of looking for the ugliness in people, places, situation, seek beauty. We find exactly what we’re looking for.

10.
