“I strongly suggest that teens read this story and discuss the character’s actions openly with an adult. School Social Workers, Counselors and Librarians can also effectively use this book as vehicle for students that are in crisis like Sade to ‘open up’ and receive the help that they so desperately need.

I highly recommend this book for teens and those who work with teens. This is a book that should not be missed.”

Sade’s Secret by Sparkle is the kind of contemporary fiction that grabs you from the first page and won’t let go. Sade is a smart, fifteen year old, living with her mother Joyce and Joyce’s boyfriend Calvin. Joyce works at night and Sade is left in Calvin’s care from age ten. Calvin is a heartless, calculating man with no sense of morality and he treats Sade like property, using threats and money to keep her in line.

Joyce on the other hand, suffers from low self-esteem and spends her time working and supporting a man. A man who disrespects her and who she places before her child. I spent much of the book screaming at Joyce to wake up. Sparkle had me so involved in the storytelling I felt I knew the characters. There are also well developed supporting characters.

Sade’s Secret is a very timely story that should be read, by mothers and daughters, men and educators and discussed widely. Kudos to Sparkle for a story that could have been dark and heavy but was relatable and interesting at the same time. I completed the book in mere hours. Highly recommended.

Amazon: 4/ Mosaic Stones: 4.5

Heading: See No Evil

As children, we tend to look to our parents for protection, happiness, and some wisdom their parents are too out of touch to know. What happens when a parent allows the safety and happiness of her child to be the last thing to cross her mind? Sade Washington in Sparkle’s Sade’s Secret knows all to well what happens.

Sade and her mother, Joyce, attempts to live a normal a life as possible. Once Joyce allowed her boyfriend, Calvin, into their home life permanently, Sade’s life changed. This was the beginning of Sade keeping many years of secrets from her mother and her two best friends, Dena and Crystal. The things Calvin was doing to Sade made her change rolls with her mother for five years. Sade had now become the protector, instead of the protected. What was Sade protecting her mother from?

Joyce felt as though the one person who could possibly love her unconditionally was taken from her and Calvin was the only hope she had left. In trying to please Calvin, she missed the signs of things in her life going terribly wrong. Joyce’s wake up call showed up in the form of an empty pregnancy test box. In confronting Sade, Joyce got some answers, albeit not what she was hoping for, but answers nonetheless. When she asked who the father of Sade’s baby was, Joyce was caught off guard. Who was Sade’s baby father? How would they make it through such a difficult and stressful time?

Sparkle took me on an emotional ride within Sade’s Secret. If I could have killed or maimed a person or two, I would have. The main subject matter was very strong and at times upsetting. Sade and Joyce’s story provided a glimpse into the life of a mother depending on a man to provide her with all the love she needs, while sacrificing the sacred bond between a mother and her daughter. I recommend Sade’s Secret to readers of family drama and mother-daughter relationships.

The author provided an uncorrected proof for review purposes.

Shelia M. Goss’ Ruthless is an interesting book that places a modern twist on the biblical story of David and Bathsheba.

David King is a wealthy man who literally has it all, money, power and any woman he wants but he only has eyes for Sheba. Although he knows it is wrong he can’t stop thinking about Sheba and how he can convince her to be with him. He eventually does some ruthless things to get what he wants, but can he pay the price for his actions?

Bathsheba Baker Richards is the happily married wife of Uriah Richards. She feels an instant attraction to David but has no intention to act on that attraction. Although she and Uriah have some financial issues they are still very much in love.

When David and Bathsheba meet you just know nothing good is going to come out of this relationship especially when God is nowhere in the midst. The author also gives us closure on her first Christian fiction book in the series Delilah. We finally find out what happens to Delilah and how she relates to the story of David and Bathsheba.

I enjoyed reading this book. It started out a little choppy but the storyline picked up and moved right along. It was a very quick read. I found myself rereading 2 Samuel 11-13:25, to reacquaint myself with the biblical story and I was pleasantly surprised that Ms. Goss followed the scripture. I anxiously await the next story of her notorious women of the bible.

One of my favorite authors new book, Secret Obsession, is in stores now.

My view of Secret Obsession by Kimberla Lawson Roby:
Secret Obsession is not another Curtis Black novel, but the main character Paige has the same unforgetable traits as Curtis. Paige’s antics throughout the book will have you talking back to the book. With a sister like Paige, who needs enemies. After witnessing some of the things Paige does to her own sister, Camille, readers will wonder at first if Paige has any redeeming qualities. Paige’s obsession wrecks havoc in the lives of everyone she comes in contact with. As the story unfolds, readers will find out that Paige isn’t the only one who is carrying a secret. The story has an underlying message of the consequences of harboring secrets. Secret Obsession now ranks as one of my favorite books by Kimberla Roby because the drama, intriguing plot and main and secondary characters held my interest from page one until the end.

About the book:

Paige Donahue has always lived in her sister Camille’s shadow. As children, Camille had the grades, the friends, and their parents’ love, while Paige was left with hand-me-downs and criticism. Now as adults, Camille lives an idyllic life with her husband, Pierce, and her two perfect children in a beautiful home, while Paige is stuck in a small condo with bills she can’t afford to pay. But no more. With seeds of doubt planted in both Camille’s and Pierce’s minds, Paige’s plan to steal her brother-in law starts to work.

Every since I got my Nook Color back in the Spring, I’ve been downloading ebooks weekly. I’ve discovered some stories that are only available as eBooks. Another thing I’ve discovered since downloading ebooks is what are called serial stories. The ebooks cost anywhere from 99 cents to $2.99 and the characters and their stories continue in several ebooks, similiar to a soap opera or television series.

The four authors below write serial stories and have written books with unforgettable characters and that’s why I’m enjoying their series.

K Elliott’s Godsend series

About Godsend:

Brian Cathcart and Inell “Echo” Harrison set out to solve missing persons cases and cold case homicides that the police have given up on, and they don’t give a damn about any laws that may be broken along the way. Godsend Investigative Services will get results for the right price.

In this 5-story edition, which is a compilation of the first five books in order, Brian and Echo will cross paths with a war vet who has PTSD, an FBO criminal profiler who sells information, a Mexican gang that kidnaps children, a construction worker who is dying for a good fist fight, a few rappers who also pose as robbers of fancy restaurants, a murderous cop who has been promoted to detective, a Middle-Eastern terrorist couple, and a reverend who has a radio station and a deadly past. But even with this heads-up notice, you still won’t be prepared for this violently savvy thriller series and its constant, over-the-speed-limit pace.

Kayenne’s G-Men series

About G-Men:

All that appears to be glamorous isn’t, even in the life of a male dancer. They each have their own sets of dreams and aspirations but they get trapped in the world of dancing and so much more and can’t find their way out; especially when their boss is the notorious Kandi.

Don’t let Kandi’s sweet name fool you. She’s harder than any pimp could ever be. She strives off of the mighty dollar and will do anything to protect her empire. When Pearl Tongue, Black Knight, and Toronto team up together to get out of the life they’ve come to know over the last few years, all hell breaks loose.

Kandi’s motto: It’s never personal, it’s business.

Noire’s G-Spot 2 series

About G-Spot 2:

G-Spot 2 is a sexy street novel told in 7 parts. Each installment of the MASS MARKET series is woven through an urban principle of the Seven Deadly Sins, with one part released each month.

Sequel to G-Spot, the #1 National Bestselling Urban Erotic Tale.

Juicy-Mo Stanfield is back and she’s still the hottest chick in Harlem!

Harlem hasn’t been the same since the notorious Granite “G” McKay was brutally murdered in a back room of the G-Spot Social Club. In the aftermath, not only has G’s massive cache of doe gone missing, but Juicy has skipped town with Gino…G’s very own son!

And now Ace and Pluto, two of G’s most gutter henchmen, are hell-bent on finding the enormous pile of greenbacks that G stashed away while building his grimy empire. To make things worse, Money-Making Monique, the G-Spot’s top stripper and Juicy’s sexy, conniving rival, is hell-bent on getting some payback of her own. Can Juicy and Gino find happiness as they try to build a new life together? Or will mayhem, murder, and the bitter wrath of the streets track them down to get what’s due?

Omar Tyree’s Corrupted series

About Corrupted:

Coined the man with the “golden eye”, in the past decade, Vincent, a native Bronze, New Yorker, has hand-picked, edited and positioned more than a dozen bestselling books from his stable of authors, while generating more than a hundred million dollars in revenue for the Williams & Klein Publishing Group.

Vincent can’t miss and can do wrong, as he rises to a powerful senior editor position with the publisher. But as he rises, so does his ego, creating a reckless and eccentric craving for personal and professional experimentations. Vincent asks himself, “What will these writers all do to become bestsellers and remain in the public limelight?” With a tight circle of volatile authors in his midst, their every weakness soon becomes bait to be used against them, while their power-dunk editor assumes a position of absolute authority. And things fall apart around them.

Check them out and then let’s discuss.

Ruthless is about marriage, sacrifices, and desires. The author has done it again by providing readers with an entertaining and suspenseful book. The main characters kept me on a rollercoaster while anticipating their next move.

Secrets Untold is about blending families. The author provides readers with characters that have realistic emotions that any reader can relate to. This story deals with a family secret and how both families dealt with the secret once it was revealed.

He is powerful and has everything a man could ever want, except the woman of his dreams. That until he meets his employee’s wife, Bathsheba. He will do anything he can to make Sheba his, even if that means sending her husband to Afghanistan to get him out of the way.

I cannot give this review its due justice without giving away the story line. However, I will say this: Ruthless is full of sinning, sainthood, tons of praying and God’s grace.

Ruthless by Shelia M. Goss does not disappoint in the drama department. It is an example of what we’ve come to expect from this bestselling author. Once again, she has showed us her tremendous ability to weave a story line that always has a message. You have got to read this book!
