My Invisible Husband

RT Rating: 4 Stars
Category: CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Publisher: Urban
Published: December 2006
Type: Contemporary Romance (African-American)

Overall, the story is interesting and entertaining…

This novel creates emotionally and sensually charged scenes between  Nikki and Byron without using excessive expletives and lewdness, which is refreshing. There’s a lot of action in between the conniving, conspiring and courting. The characters are dynamic and vividly portrayed, and the secondary players add extra spice.

- Love this book!
My Invisible Husband, by talented author Sheila M. Goss, is one of the best books I have read this year!

Our heroine, Nikki Montana, has painted herself into a corner with little means of escape. Frustrated with the tiresome remarks from family and friends regarding her single lifestyle, she concocts a bogus wedding and marriage. Thus, enters her “black knight” in shining armor, the handsome Byron Matthews. He falls for Nikki and agrees to keep the masquerade going. Round and round these two go, as their love and their lies grow deeper and deeper.

I found this book hard to put down. In fact, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. It was a story that I never wanted to end. The author takes her readers on a wild ride that is both fun and exciting! I never knew what to expect next.

As Nikki begins to realize her feelings for Byron, she is then faced with accepting his hidden past. It’s a tangled web that the reader almost enjoys at the expense of the characters involved. I am still waiting for the other shoe to fall. You will, too, believe me!

Sheila M. Goss knows how to keep her audience on the edge of its seat. This is a book that I highly recommend. Let the games begin!

Armchair Interviews says: Wow, what a great book.

REVIEWS for ROSES ARE THORNS, VIOLETS ARE TRUE

4.78 out of 5 stars Am I my sister’s keeper?

Reviewer: The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (see more about me) from RAWSISTAZ Book Club

Being a part of a set of twins has got to be one the hardest situations for children as they grow into adulthood. In ROSES ARE THORNS VIOLETS ARE TRUE, Shelia Goss takes a very in-depth look at the lives of twins, Rose and Violet. They are identical twins and that’s where the similarities end. They are as different as night and day. Rose is very self-centered, jealous and devious. Violet, on the other hand, is sweet natured, attentive and cares very deeply for others. Even as little children, Rose was allowed to cast Violet in an unpleasant light using childish pranks that only twins can play. Violet, however, was always expected to forgive Rose and move on. Their parents and Rose expected her to always have her sister’s back no matter the circumstances. As they grew into adults it was easy to see that Rose coveted everything that Violet was and had. But, there are some lines that sisters just don’t cross. Once that line is crossed, forgiveness becomes a little too hard to carry out.

… Ms. Goss weaves a fascinating tale that had me reading well into the night. This was sibling rivalry at its worst. The ending was not what I was expecting. Instead, I received a lesson in familial love and forgiveness. It left me rooting for both sisters to find that elusive happiness they both craved and a way back to each other. This was a great read and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

What happens when the person that is supposed to be the closest to you winds up being the one that hurts you the most? Shelia Goss gives us the answer in her debut novel, Roses are Thorns Violets are True.

Sibling rivalry is an understatement for the feelings that Rose and Violet have towards one another. All of their lives Rose has made it her mission to get what she wants; usually at the expense of her sister. Her constant need for attention has driven a wedge between the two sisters. She is a true drama queen that is why she is a very successful actress. At the other end of the spectrum you have her twin, Violet. Violet is very bright woman. Her “girl next door” demeanor makes people want to be in her presence. She shuns any form attention, which is hard when your twin is a megastar. Throughout their lives Violet has been able to forgive Rose for all her indiscretions; that is up until now. Has Rose finally gone past the point of no return or is she finally looking out for her sister’s best interest. Their relationship has finally reached a crossroad. It is now time for them to decide if they will finish the journey together or forever walk separate paths.

Ms. Goss has the makings of a master storyteller. Her attention to detail allows her novel to span a period of years without you feeling as if you have missed something. She grabs her readers’ attention and doesn’t let go. This is definitely one that will give the bookclubs something to discuss.

Even though this was a story about twins, anyone with siblings could relate to the relationships in Roses are Thorns, Violets are True. Often times childhood resentments between siblings, cousins, and even childhood friends can carry over into adulthood and plague our lives forever. That’s exactly what it can do, unless we learn as adults to forgive. Roses are Thorns shows us how forgiveness can be a hard thing, but how good it can be once we free ourselves of such burden.

Shelia Goss does a wonderful job breaking rules and doing it perfectly as she uses third and first person fluidly throughout the story. It is craftily told in alternating and non-repetitive voices between the sisters and you are able to understand their innermost thoughts as situations arise. The refreshing new voice explored in Roses are Thorns, Violets are True will definitely entertain you.
